Silence+Other Sounds Hellen WAV KONTAKT

Hellen is a Kontakt library built around ghostly voices and unsettling creature sounds. Created by S+OS in collaboration with vocalist Alessandra Cognetta (Psamathes), the library explores a wide range of vocal expressions — from operatic soprano performances (fully multisampled) to screams, whispers, growls, gasps, yells, and more. Alongside the vocals, Hellen includes layered tonal and atonal textures and a collection of found sounds, such as animal recordings, metallic friction, and bowed effects.

Many of these sounds have been transformed using advanced sound-design techniques — including spectral morphing in Kyma, formant shaping, and vowel processing — resulting in a deep and expressive palette. You’ll find ethereal soprano layers, demonic screams, mournful laments, howling voices, unsettling laughs, designed creature effects, whispered fragments, broken phrases, monstrous vocalizations, piercing shrieks, tempo-synced breathing loops, and even syllables and phrases spoken in a fictional language inspired by ancient Latin.

All 12 instruments included in Hellen — both playable and sound-design focused — are especially suited for horror and thriller scoring. The library was designed to meet the needs of modern composers and ambient producers, covering everything from subtle haunted textures to aggressive vocal stabs, jump-scare effects, and intense creature vocals.

The Instruments

01 – Vocal Textures

Vocal Textures is a playable instrument built on two independent layers (L1 and L2) of tonal and atonal vocal sounds. Each layer can be blended, filtered, and morphed directly from the main UI. Controls include cutoff, resonance, LFO, and volume envelope per layer. The Vocal Morph knob allows you to smoothly combine any two sounds, creating evolving and expressive textures. This instrument includes 56 Kontakt snapshots.

02–08 – One-Shot SFX

Hellen includes seven One-Shot SFX instruments, each focused on a specific category:

  • Screams

  • Laments & Howlings

  • Creatures

  • Whispers & Sentences

  • Monster Growls

  • Shrieks & Screeches

  • Gasps & Yells

Each sample features individual control over volume, pitch, low-pass and high-pass filters, LFO, volume envelope, and forward or reverse playback. A Global Controls panel allows you to adjust parameters across all samples at once. With the Extend switch enabled, any selected sample can be played chromatically across the keyboard.

09–10 – Syllables & Breath Sequencers

These two vocal sequencers allow you to build rhythmic phrases using tempo-synced syllables or breathing sounds.

  • The Syllables Sequencer uses a fictional language loosely inspired by ancient Latin.

  • The Breath Sequencer focuses on short, expressive breathing elements.

Both instruments feature two independent voices that can be activated or muted per step. All syllables were recorded at 70 BPM and use Kontakt’s Time Machine Pro (HQ), ensuring high-quality results even when changing tempo.

11 – Vocalise Builder

The Vocalise Builder is a dedicated sound-design instrument designed to create custom demonic and creature-like voices. It uses three independent layers of relatively dry source material, giving you maximum flexibility for experimentation.

The layers can be stacked instantly using the green key on the virtual keyboard. Each layer supports standard playback or Time Stretch mode, with control over stretch amount and formants. Built-in randomization tools make it easy to generate unique and evolving vocal effects quickly.

12 – Breathing Loops

The Breath Loops instrument features tempo-synced breathing loops (originally recorded at 70 BPM) that automatically follow your DAW’s tempo. Independent Half Tempo and Formant controls per sample allow you to reshape timing and perceived vocal character, making it easy to create tense, rhythmic breathing patterns.
